- Democracy, at its best, can only offer one true guarantee: each person has the freedom to choose their own ends, within the ‘environment’ created. The Third Option believes that people are a natural product of their environment, and Democracy demands that if citizens must share a ‘common life’, this life must consist of a shared environment that is Fair (consistent), Certain (free from unreasonable worry), and Inclusive (where we all relate as equals, per the requisites of ‘Democratic Equality’)
To best ensure the freedom of choice and liberty that Democracy promises, It must be allowed to create the ‘environment’ that best facilitates these Democratic norms. Thus, in creating this shared ‘common life’, people would need to be educated, given work that pays a livable wage, enjoy an equal measure of safety and security, as well as access to health care, and for their lifelong effort, be rewarded with an equal share of retirement dividends. Within this structure, people will be able to navigate freely, and seek out their version of the good life, thanks to the version of Economic Democracy we have chosen to implement.
